Soft Tissue Augmentation

Gum defects can present as gingival recession, thin tissue, or an inadequate band of keratinized tissue. To address these conditions, we routinely perform free gingival grafting (FGG) and connective tissue grafting (CTG) procedures. While these surgeries share certain similarities, each is distinct in its goals and intended outcomes.

Reasons to Consider Sinus Augmentation

Free Gingival Grafts (FGG)

In some cases, the gum tissue surrounding the teeth is thin and more vulnerable to damage. A lack of adequate keratinized tissue means that even minor trauma — particularly in the presence of inflammation — can lead to gingival recession. In recent years, long-term research has demonstrated the benefits of keratinized tissue around both teeth and dental implants.

Connective Tissue Graft (CTG)

This type of soft tissue augmentation is commonly used to achieve root coverage in areas of recession. It is routinely performed to address patient concerns such as sensitivity and esthetics, as well as to help prevent decay, which can develop more readily on exposed root surfaces.

Donor Tissue Types

A number of grafting materials are available for this procedure. The patient's own tissue is the gold standard - usually harvested from the palate. However, synthetic grafts can also be used safely.

What to expect during Sinus Augmentation

01
Evaluation & Imaging

Dr. O'Donnell and team uses 3D imaging to measure your existing bone height, assess the sinus cavity, and determine the appropriate grafting approach for your anatomy.

02
Membrane Elevation

A small opening is created in the gum tissue to access the lateral sinus wall, and the sinus membrane is gently lifted to create space for the graft material.

03
Graft Placement

Bone graft material is carefully packed into the newly created space beneath the sinus membrane, where it will integrate with your natural bone over the healing period.

04
Healing & Planning

Over the following months, the graft material fuses with your existing bone, and our team monitors your progress before scheduling implant placement.
